The counsellors below can complete the counsellor section of the Disability Certificate – Counselling, so you can apply to Work and Income for help with counselling costs through the Disability Allowance. Each profile shows their session fee, where they see people, whether they work online, and whether they are taking new clients.
New to this? Our guide to the WINZ counselling form explains who qualifies, the weekly maximum and how to apply.
Find a counsellor who takes Work and Income clients
Every counsellor below completes the counsellor section of the Disability Certificate - Counselling and lists their session fee. Choose your region or TLA to see who works near you; counsellors who work online are included wherever you are.
No counsellors taking Work and Income clients match your search yet. Try a wider area or include online sessions.
Choosing a counsellor for a Disability Allowance application
- Compare the session fee with what the allowance can cover. The Disability Allowance has a weekly maximum across all your disability-related costs, so a higher fee or more frequent sessions may leave an amount for you to pay.
- Check their professional membership. Work and Income only helps with counselling from a counsellor or psychologist who meets its registration or membership requirements, and each profile here lists theirs.
- Think about how you will attend. Online sessions save travel; if you go in person, the allowance may also help with regular travel to counselling.
- Talk about fees and payment before your first session. The allowance is normally paid to you, and you pay your counsellor.
Common questions
Can I choose my own counsellor for WINZ funding?
Yes, as long as they meet Work and Income's professional requirements and complete their section of the Disability Certificate – Counselling. Work and Income decides whether to help and how much.
Do these counsellors also take ACC clients?
Some do, and their profile says so. ACC funding and the Disability Allowance are separate pathways. If your counselling relates to an ACC claim, check with ACC first.
Are you a counsellor?
If you complete Disability Certificates for your clients, create your directory profile and tick Work and Income on your service.
If you need support right now, call or text 1737 at any time to talk with a trained counsellor. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 111.
